The first time you travel the road to Botham, there's a miniboss.

When you get to Botham, you'll get hints about Van's past after an epic intel gathering cutscene.
Once you teleport back to Vaskia, the story will continue. You'll then fight off some of Xu Gong's mooks before being forced to walk all the way back to Botham. On the way, you'll find blue enemies who are actually somewhat high-level bandits.
At Botham, you'll learn more about Van's past, where his friend comitted suicide. Afterwards, you'll go through another war sequence that ends in a duel with Xu Gong. I don't know if this is true, but it looks like whoever you pick to duel him will get some nice gear.

Fortunately, he has less HP than before. Don't worry about your choice too much, since these aren't ultimate gear anyways.
