Console Comparison #5 - Tetris Plus (PSX/Saturn)
Released by Jaleco in 1996, Tetris Plus on the PSX and Saturn are almost nearly identical ports to one another. The graphics in both versions look nearly the same, showing that the PSX could do 2D just as well as the Saturn. The only trade-offs between the ports are slightly longer load times on the PSX, and the Saturn having it's trademark mesh pattern used for transparencies.
A few interesting facts that didn't make it into the video (For those that bother to read the description):
- The same team of 4 programmers at Jaleco handled both ports, working on both at the time according to the dates of files on both of the discs.
- Jaleco themselves must have found the ports near identical as well. The artwork and instruction manuals feature the same set of pictures for both versions. Looking closely at the PSX version's artwork shows how they used a screengrab from the Saturn port showcasing Edit Mode since the Saturn controller's button prompts can be clearly seen.
All games are played on actual consoles using actual game copies.
