What do you get if you cross Flatout with Burnout? You get Crash N Burn. This is a street racer released for the PS2 and XBox in 2004. If you like car brawlers, maybe this game is right up your street?

I watched a countdown of the top 50 PS2 driving games recently, and noticed this. I found a copy and tried it out. Not bad! It has the charm to lure me in and I completed the championship mode recently. I think it took about a month to complete it, but driving veterans say they completed this in just one day. There is variety on offer, and the courses do get more fun as the game goes on. The use of Nitro also means Boosting has to be mastered, and makes all the difference.

The game does has some down sides, like the limited number of tracks, and the grinding to level up. I found the latter most annoying, as you dont get upgrades until you win a race, so some races have to be run quite a few times to win. Also, EXP maxes out at 20, so there is no way to fully upgrade any of the cars. This means the hardest races rely often on pure luck, or having to restart a race 20 times in order to finally get a good position off the line. There isnt much depth here, but winning a race is always a good feeling, and at first the game feels larger than it actually is. The retries involved get repetitive, and cholesterol levels will be boiling after a while, so make sure you dont have a heart attack.

Probably I'd give this game a 7; it has some charm and addiction, but once completed there is never a reason to return.
