Taichi even talks about the cloning facility and how weird it was. That always got me too. You could clone dead characters. But were they really the same people or just clones carrying the same memories? The ending also fits Phantasy Star 2 very well.
It could be a different game or a made up one. But since Cross Channel has a lot of references to various things in it then most likely Taichi is referring to a real game.
