Daos is just chillin' offscreen. This is similar to the hidden stairs because Daos is set to appear after you receive the shield from the tablet. Notice that he's got the Dual Blade too. This is because it also appears in the scene and Daos will wield it before it returns to Maxim. If you look closely it seems a bit glitchy looking at the bottom. At first glance it looks like Daos just has the sword back mounted and is trying to look all cool despite having a penchant for calling people little hoochees. But it's just that the Dual Blade is "stuck" to his sprite since they are both part of an event and set to appear after Maxim checks the tablet.

I did retry this and was actually able to get Daos to turn left. But he still doesn't back face you. I wanted to see what the sword looked like from the back. Oh well. Judging by the way it looks from the side though... I think it might not appear on his back from the back, but rather be stuck behind his sprite regardless. If that makes sense. I'm highly caffeinated right now. But Daos' sprite is very stubborn and sometimes doesn't like too turn.

Note that I was able to use the walk through walls code that only lets you move up in order to leave Portravia without going back to the lab. I then warped to Treble because I thought I'd have to walk over the ocean with the world map code in order to get back to the tower and check on Daos. But you actually get your ship back when you warp! And he's still there! XD

I don't know if other areas have phenomena. I didn't see it in Daos' shrine.
