Damn Fine Scary Pie - Episode 3: Don't Throw the Baby Out With the Baphomet

Well, like I said, I was planning for four streams, but aiming for three. And there just wasn't that much left to the game after my last stream. Having said that, at least this game seemed to ramp up the danger level back to the point I was at when I started this game. So, that at least made for a much more tense experience this time around. I guess the issue is that I never really felt like I was in danger of missing out on finishing up on this session. I mean, I essentially got what I wanted regardless... but I have to admit, it's a bit more exciting when I can't tell whether or not I'll make it all the way.
The mechanic for determining which ending you get in this game are interesting. There are a total of five endings possible, with one essentially being a bizarre "joke" ending that should be impossible to get on the first playthrough. Aside from that, you've got a "Bad" and a "Good" ending possible, with the possibility to slightly tweak it to allow for the standard or a "plus" version, depending on how you approach an event in-game. I opted for the "best" ending, which is referred to as "GOOD+" and frankly, I was shocked at just how simple it was to determine it. I feel like most survival horror games force you to finish the game in a set time limit, or go out of your way several times and take on some major challenges to find special items. This time, it was just a quick sidequest that doesn't really take you away from the main game. Granted, you probably wouldn't know about this without a guide anyway, unless you go out of your way to check out every nook and cranny of Silent Hill itself... and some of the progression isn't exactly obvious. But still, it didn't take me long to get through.
The final "dungeon", as we've been calling them, Nowhere was also a highlight for me. So many interesting twists and turns and callbacks and puzzles, it was just so interesting. Too bad the final boss fight was... what it was. I don't even think I got to take a good look at the damn thing while I was dealing damage to it. Also, for some reason, its design really hammered home the fact that both Silent Hill and the original Quake seemed to utilize similar color palettes and even overall aesthetics to some extent. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Or maybe it's because they were both fifth-gen games with body horror aesthetics and a fascination with brown and grey color palettes.
Either way, I enjoyed this game way more than my minor experiences with classic Resident Evil games led me to believe. To the extent where I'm totally willing to stream more games in the series down the line. Personally, I'm hoping Konami shoves the old PC ports of 2 and 3 onto GOG, like they did with the fourth game. While playing directly on my platform of choice is a nice bonus, the truth is I've heard that there are mods out there that turn them into "proper" HD re-releases, absolutely blowing Konami's half-baked efforts on the PS3 and Xbox 360 out of the water. And it'd be nice to support an official release, as opposed to scrounging around for old rips of those depreciated versions.
