Take up your sword and defeat enemies for your survival. It's a dark land indeed in this action and running-based game called Dark Lands. The goal here is to control your shadow-like character in the field and survive for as long as you can. But unlike your usual run-and-jump game, you can battle monsters and warriors on the field. Use your sword to slash and stab your enemies until they fall down. The enemies can also hurt your hero so you need to block their attacks. Slide or perform double jumps to avoid spikes and pits. Collect the white orbs because it will be your key for upgrades.

Sadly, no, this isn't a remake of the 1992 Micropose game, as awesome as that would have been. Fortunately, despite sharing the same name (give or take a space or two), Dark Lands is a pretty spiffy game in its own right.

There are a lot of games out there that try to get by on style alone. Now, while a rather stylish and spiffy-looking game can certainly hold the interest for a few minutes or maybe hours at best, it takes more than looking good to be considered a good game. Dark Lands manages to pull off having both stylish style, and... gameplay-y gameplay? No, that doesn't make sense. -Good- gameplay then, it manages to have stylish style and good gameplay, even if that doesn't have the same clever wordplay.

Most everything in the game is... well, -dark-, as the name would suggest. All of the character sprites, platforms, etc... are nothing more than silhouettes. This gives the game that aforementioned stylishness. It's a neat look for a game, and it comes off as being rather cool-looking. The backgrounds are also mostly silhouettes, but they are done in varying degrees of darkness, giving the background a sense of depth. They've also got a real neat parallax effect going along with the fog and the rays of the sun shining through the clouds. All in all, those effects come together for some great atmosphere and great aesthetic.

In terms of gameplay, the game has an odd mix of platforming, endless running, fighting, a mix of Prince of Persia-ing, stirred all together, and set to bake at 250 degrees for thirty minutes or until golden. Er... Yeah. Anywho, it has the endless running and platformer feel in that you are tasked with running as far as possible without dying. It has the platformer feel in that there are, of course, all sorts of platforms for you to run across. Unlike other endless runners though, you do at times stop in your tracks to take out some bad guys. There are certainly other endless runners out there where you've got to take on bad guys, but most of these are one-hit kills, and you can tear right through them easily enough. Dark Lands provides you with more of a challenge, from tiny little goblins to hulking cyclopean behemoths that can crush your puny, fleshy body with a single hit.

On the plus side, you're able to purchase all sorts of upgrades, not only to your stats like health and speed, but also to your equipment. You've got a whole range of weapons and armor to choose from, and what you choose will also affect your abilities. Be careful though, the wrong gear can severely slow you down, and the Prince of Persia-ing aspect of the game where you have to jump (at break-neck speeds at that) past all sorts of obstacles can get a bit trickier unless you've got the agility to pull them off.

Well, that just about wraps it up for this review. Go on and grab yourself a copy of Dark Lands, it's free to play, and it's a whole lot of fun, so go on and give it a shot!
