Dark Souls 3: When All the Host Advantages Aren't Enough to Win a Duel (Raw Clip)
7Fighting a 50/50 playstyle (back pedal to do a turn and burn or parry) who's using a straight sword main hand weapon is relatively unimpressive, the back pedaling and weapon class do most of the work. Fighting such a player who is also using host advantages just trivializes the fight into one of estus attrition. I don't consider myself to be a great duelist, especially now that I don't do them anymore, but I think it's safe to say that consistently winning isn't and shouldn't be based on having a higher estus count.
As an invader you'll generally need the host to use 2+ estus for every 1 you use but in a 1v1 with experienced players this should only happen if; someone is using a much worse weapon, there is a notable difference in skill, and/or someone makes a very long series of bad reads. After fighting this host for a bit I realized I had seen him in someone else's stream a few days prior, doing the same exact thing. This host didn't care about the quality of a victory, he only wanted what should had been easy victories.
I don't know if this host was stream sniping me or not though, if he was he brought a SL 103+10 to fight a SL 81+8. Interestingly, players like this are super quick to show up in a chat and say GG when they win (but hardly ever mean Good Game) however when they lose they generally just disappear. Seeing as this was probably the first invasion I used a free aim crossbow with exploding bolts to do more than annoy a soulmass caster I do wonder how much better I could've done. I may no longer go to the arena or participate in FCs but I can recognize the usefulness of a correctly used tool even if it's almost exclusively associated with duelists.
