DaVinci Resolve 17.3 on Mac M1 8K 24FPS playback test H.265 vs ProRes Inter-Frame vs Intra-Frame
17In this video I'm doing basic timeline playback testing with 8K 24FPS media within DaVinci Resolve 17.3 in an 8K 24FPS project timeline running on Mac M1 Apple Silicon.
The Apple Silicon M1 computer I'm using is the MacBook Air M1. This is the 8GB version with 512GB storage. This means that it has the full 8 core GPU. In the tests the Mac doesn't hit thermal throttling.
In the test I'm comparing two codecs, H.265 vs ProRes 422 HQ, both at 8K 24FPS. So this test is to see how the latest DaVinci Resolve deals with both of these codecs on simple playback.
By extension of the codecs used, this test is also comparing the timeline response of Inter-Frame vs Intra-Frame codecs.
What's very interesting here is the impact of DaVinci Resolve 17.3's new optimisation on Mac M1 for H.264 and H.265 codecs and media. It's really odd to see that the timeline performance of H.265 is actually better than ProRes, due to the new M1 optimization in Resolve 17.3.
In fact, this instance where H.265, an Inter-Frame codec, is beating ProRes, an Intra-Frame codec, as far as sull render resolution real-time playback ability is concerned. Is the first time that I have seen such a turnaround in any NLE. Usually, system and production Intra-Frame codecs, such as Pro Res, are far easier to edit.
