DaVinci Resolve 17.2 vs Resolve 17.3 8K 60FPS ProRes playback on MacBook Air M1 8GB
79In this video I'm testing Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve Studio version 17.2.2 against the latest Resolve Studio 17.3 specifically comparing their abilities to play variations of ProRes video files at 8K 60FPS.
The first part of the test is using Resolve 17.2.2 with a project setup of 8K 60FPS with 8K 60FPS ProRes media and also 4K 60FPS ProRes media. The second part of the test is exactly the same but using the latest Resolve version 17.3
The computer being used is the Apple MacBook M1 with 8GB of RAM. This is the 512GB version which means that it has the 8 GPU cores on the SoC. Resolve 17.3 has been further optimised for M1 Macs but does this translate to better performance with Apple Silicon M1 on the MacBook Air M1, with only 8GB RAM. Or, is the MacBook Air M1 already at its performance limit due to the 8GB even with the full 8 core GPU?
Or, should we really be expecting 8K 60FPS performance from any Mac M1 computer at the moment? Or would it be more reasonable to temper our expectations and to reasonably not be expecting this type of video processing performance until we get to Macs with Apple Silicon M1X or even M2 Apple Silicon based Macs next year?
