DaVinci Resolve 17.3 Mac M1 problems processing encoding exporting 8K 60FPS H.265
In this video I'm showing a problem with DaVinci Resolve 17.3 on Mac M1 where it fails to encode H.265 8K 60FPS.
Since recording this video I've found that it can't encode any framerate at 8K UHD as I also tried H.265 8K UHD 24FPS but it will happily encode and export at 4K UHD at 60FPS and 24FPS using H.265.
What's confusing is that error message saying 'current clip could not be processed' isn't really clear, at least to me. Does this mean the source clip in the timeline which is ProRes? Which is odd as Resolve clearly plays and processes these ProRes clips when playing in the timeline. Or does it mean it can't process the destination H.265 codec? Which is also odd as it does do this in 4K UHD.
The second message is also odd saying 'can not find appropriate codec for encoding the video frame'. This seems to suggest that there isn't any H.265 codec available but there is as I can use H.265 in 4K UHD.
If I had to guess, I'd say that DaVinci Resolve on Mac M1 isn't capable of encoding 8K using H.265 either in hardware or software and the error message isn't clear about it.
Here's some more information about this problem that I posted on the Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve forum. If I find any answers I'll make another video.
Hi.
I'm new to Resolve and just working out some workflow stuff.
I have various ProRes 8K 60FPS media files in an 8K 60FPS timeline in 17.3 on a MacBook Air M1 8GB/512GB. While this project and media configuration wont play real-time it does allow for certain testing.
With this setup I'm trying to export 8K 60FPS H.265/MP4 but the exporter does not encode anything. The export initiates but does not render/encode anything, pauses and then after about a minute the encode fails with a message 'Render job failed as the current clip could not be processed'. This happens regardless of selecting hardware acceleration or not.
I'm not sure what 'Render job' is referring to, is it the timeline media render or the render to the output codec?
Is there a limitation in 17.3 for the resolution and/or frame rate of H.265 exports?
I'm assuming Video Toolbox is being used for hardware acceleration of both decoding and encoding for H.264 and H.265 codecs, is that correct?
If so, is there a limit for VTB?
If not, what is doing the hardware acceleration?
Even in software encoding the encode fails. Is software encoding of H.265 a bespoke Resolve codec using the CPU, or something else?
If so, does that have an upper limit?
If I do the exact same thing but to ProRes, there are no issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
