Big changes to my YouTube channel - Moving content to new channels - Channel update for July 2021 :(
In this update video which is for the month of July in the year 2021, I'm bleating on about what is the biggest change and decision I've ever made about and to my YouTube Channel.
For some time now it has been bothering me that my channel isn't growing as fast as I'd like. Whether I like it or not, YouTube and Google expect channels to operate a certain way and that way is not how I've done things to date.
Historically my channel started off as microphone tech thing. Then I expanded more into camera stuff and then ultimately the combination of reviewing and demonstarting microphones and cameras naturally progressed to vlogging. For the longest of times I did not like being in front of the camera and if I'm being honest it's still not my natural environment, I'm usually a behind the scenes person. However, as time as marched on and as means must, I've grown into a vlogger or is it a podcaster or blogger. I'm still not sure what the difference but needless to say I'm now very comfortable in front of the camera as well as behind it.
Over the last year and a half or so I've added more technology stuff to what I review and given myself more directions. This variety has been something that I've really enjoyed, however It has meant that YouTube and Google have found more and more difficult to categorise my channel and content as I don't 'play by their rules'. Although, during this time it has become clear that the video to do with the more computer based technologies have been doing better than my traditional camera and microphone videos as far as views, subscribers and income are concerned.
So, in order to see if my channel can grow to something meaningful and faster and to something that can support me properly as a full time wage. I've now decided to refocus the channel and reduce the coverage of technology related subjects to just computer based stuff. This will include things like Apple stuff like the iPad Pro and Mac M1 devices, also Android stuff like tablets and phones and also other gadget sand devices that are used with computers, hard drives, interfaces etc.
Even after pruning my content I'm still gonna be quite wide within my technology subjects although more consistent. It may even be the case that I have to go narrower but if I do, I will re-evaluate that toward the end of the year.
So, as of this video which has been uploaded on the the 14th of July 2021, I will no longer be doing any dedicated microphone or camera videos. I will also stop doing any game related videos, even the very technical ones and I will also stop doing any videos about Edius.
I will create a new channel for my camera, microphone and vlogging stuff. I will also be treating my 'The Game Thing' channel as the only channel that has anything remotely to do with gaming and gaming tech and my Edius stuff will all be re-grouped and rebranded as either 'My Edius Videos' or 'The Edius Guy'.
There maybe one or two people out there thinking "but Dave we've herd al this before" and yes, I have tried moving stuff away etc. But this time it is very different because as I'm uploading previous videos to their new channels, I'll be deleting them from this channel. I know that may sound all final and very harsh but it will definitely ensure that I don't backtrack again and it will force me into sticking with this direction I've now committed to.
As these other channels become a bit more of a thing over the next couple of weeks or so and as soon as I've got some new content on them, I'll do some very short videos on this channel letting people know where the new channels are.
Lastly. Thank you to everyone who's ever viewed my content and subscribed to my channel. I know it sounds like a disingenuous cliche but seriously, without views, no channel will ever make it. What I'm about to do is a massive risk but I hope it's the singular biggest thing I can do in my pursuit of trying to work out how to grow my YouTube channel.
Anyway. Let's hope I haven't just thrown three years of solid work down the toilet and killed my channel :)
Cheers,
Dave.
