Days Of Thunder On The NES Was Impossible To Have Good Pit Stops!
Over the years, my love of racing and video games have often overlapped. Whether we're talking about RC ProAm, Team Losi RC Racing on the PlayStation or NASCAR or Indycar Racing from Papyrus on PC I love racing games. One of the first I played was Days of Thunder for the original NES, and man, if I thought the movie was bad there were parts of the game that were even worse. How did this game get to be so bad? And why was making a good pit stop impossible? Let's take a look.
Days of Thunder for the NES is a classic racing game loosely based on the 1990 movie of the same name, starring Tom Cruise. While other companies like Argonaut Software worked on versions for other platforms, Beam Software was specifically responsible for the NES release. The game lacked any real music tie in with the movie, and beyond the colors of the cars and the names of the drivers it really didn't follow the story of the movie.
The 2 worst parts of this game, to me, have to do with passing the competition and pitting the car for service. You literally need to perform a perfect setup to pass an AI competitor's car without hitting them, and I know many of you right now are saying that's ok because Rubbin's Racin'. Well the thing is in the game if you make too much contact with other cars YOUR CAR takes damage and eventually you won't be able to get out of 3rd gear. Those slower cars know exactly where to position their cars on track to throw the block too, which sucks.
Secondly, making a pit stop requires perfect placement of your characters during this mini-game. The left side is easy, it's getting things lined up on the right. Your Jackman needs to run around to the right side of the car to jack it up, and if he's not aligned he'll just buzz at you. One the car is up, then you have to send the tire changers around to the other side, and they also require precise alignment or they just stand there. OH, and you have to wait for the car to be off the jack to fuel it. Just so bad!
