Let's Play Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Demo Available Now On Switch
Even with all the controversy, from erasing Retro Studios from the credits to a $60 price tag, one game I've actually really been interested in playing has been Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite. The original on the Nintendo Wii is one of my favorite games on the system, and the quality of life enhancements to the game on the Switch look to be amazing. But is it good? Let's take a look and let's play the demo, now available on the Switch eShop.
Visuals:
The original looks good; upscaled to 4K through the RetroTink 4K it looks amazing. But the HD Remaster looks phenomenal. Part of that is that the game is starting at a higher resolution, meaning it has a cleaner signal to begin with. DK, the big ape that he is, looks great, and if you pay close attention you can see the design changes to DK that also appeared in the character model in the tease for Mario Kart 9. This game has never looked better!
Music:
As great as the graphics and visuals are for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, I dare say the audio and music is even better! DKC Returns has an amazing soundtrack, and the sound effects are great too, and they are just as wonderful in the HD remaster. The main theme is absolutely astounding, and all the little details are just enhanced to the nth degree. This is a fantastic-sounding game!
Play Control
One major difference between the Wii and Switch versions of this game is the control scheme. Where the original relied on motion controls this remaster uses a more traditional button press combination to play. There were a few times I caught myself shaking my Pro Controller, trying to use motion controls, but it just doesn't work that way. After a few minutes of playing I worked through my muscle memory and it plays great.
Overall
Listen, this is a great game, there's no other thing you can say about it. The problem is the price. It's a remaster of a re-release of a 15-year-old game. Charging $60 for it is an insult to Switch owners, and rather unfortunate as this game deserves to be played. I think the price will hurt the sales of this title, but if and when it goes on sale it's something to consider.
