I get is, bagging on DK Oldies is overplayed and it seems like everyone does it. But sometimes they do things that just makes me shake my head as they show they don’t always understand the customer base they are trying to serve. They recently shared a meme to X or Twitter that shows they don’t understand how retro gaming works yet again. Yes, it’s a share, they didn’t create it, but it’s so factually inaccurate that any potential humor is lost by their lack of understanding on how things worked.

So at the heard of this is a meme featuring Grandpa Simpson, stating:

“Back in my day, we had to switch to channel 3 and plug in the yellow, red, and white cables to play video games”.

There are many things wrong with this, and again they simply shared it and didn’t create it. But still, it’s wildly inaccurate. They are referencing something that is true but completely independent from each other. Turning a television to channel 3 IS a thing we did back in the day, although some areas used channel 4 based on local channels in the area. The reason for this is that this method used RF signals to play games on your television, the same as local broadcast TV stations. The Red, White, and Yellow connections, however, these are COMPOSITE video signals. For this you did NOT need to change to channel 3 because it wasn’t an RF signals, it used a separate input altogether! To use composite inputs, you hit an INPUT button or scrolled down below channel 2 in the USA to access it!

This is such a silly and avoidable mistake from DK Oldies, and something that shows that there’s an overall lack of understanding on how retro systems actually worked, at least on Joey's or the social media management side of DKO. They could have even used this to show their knowledge, asking people what was wrong with this meme and even doing a social media giveaway or contest for those who demonstrated their knowledge. But unfortunately, this was simply more of the same from DK Oldies and showed they are, well, out of touch.

What do you think of DK Oldies? Does something like this surprise you? Share your thoughts in the comments.
