Daytona USA 2 Vs Sega NASCAR Arcade in 60fps (Model 3 Vs Hikaru)
It's showdown time between the sequel to one of Sega's most popular arcade racers ever and the contender for the crown, that came out in the arcades a few year later - Daytona USA 2: Power Edition (1998) and Sega NASCAR Arcade (2000). Both version here are emulated, and in truth, it's not really a fair contest. Whilst the emulation of the Sega Model 3 board for Daytona USA 2: Power Edition (using Supermodel 0.3 SVN 494) is looking almost perfect, the emulation of the more advanced Sega Hikaru board, using DEMUL 0.7 for Sega NASCAR Arcade, still has quite a way to go yet. There is a more recent version of DEMUL than this (0.7a), which improves some things and breaks others. I'll feature it in a future upload.
Having said that though, Sega NASCAR's not looking too shabby at all here. There's still some graphical wonkiness with the shadows and reflections, and the absent engine noise but it's running at (mostly) 60 fps, with just the occasional bit of wobbly audio when the frame rate dips. It also plays nicely with my Logitech DFGT (there's no FFB in DEMUL).
Whilst both games are arcade racers based around stock cars, there's definitely a difference in how they play, with NASCAR arcade (which Sega joint produced with EA) leaning slightly, but not entirely, towards more of a sim racer type feel, compared to the out and out arcade racer-ey joy of Daytona USA 2. Both share a reliance on drafting and using the accumulated speed from this to 'slingshot' past your opponents, although in D2 it isn't quite as essential as it is in NASCAR.
Coincidentally, these were two of the best runs I've ever done in either game, I managed to break the speed record twice on the final turn in Daytona 2 and I don't think I've ever got into first place on the Beginner track quite a quickly as I do here. This was also the highest placing I've ever got on the Talledega track in Sega NASCAR, although weirdly it's not the fastest ever time I've got. For some odd reason at the end of the race in this video, after I'd input my name it just save it as three dots rather than the letters I'd just input. Weird.
