DCS: A-10C - Testing Hit Rates and Damage with the GAU-8 Gun
If you've ever strafed a tank with your Hog and wondered, "Why the HELL did it not DIE," this video is for you!
I'm trying to improve my gun technique with the goal of getting one-pass kills against T-72's. However, the debriefing screen and TacView show apparently conflicting information. For example, the debrief will show about 20 "hits" with the GAU-8, when actually you may have hit with ten times that many actual slugs.
It can be frustrating trying to figure out what you're doing wrong...line up your shot, 25 degree dive angle, pipper on target, PAC-1 on, open fire at 0.7 miles slant range and release at 0.3 miles slant range, break away and re-engage if needed.
Ok, so you're doing that, and nothing is dying! What's worse, the mission debrief shows that some of your runs scored ZERO hits?
Apparently, you're probably doing just fine.
Check my math in TacView...it reveals a lot more than the debrief screen does. I assume this is a result of the stock DCS debrief screen "grouping" bullet strikes together instead of counting each individual hit, like TacView does.
I hit with about 77% of all slugs and scored good hits on each strafing run. The debrief screen, on the other hand, showed at least one pass with no hits...that didn't happen. Every pass hit, most of them with a 70-plus hit percentage. Adding up the shots fired from TacView's event window, I arrived at 1150 shots fired, which is exactly what the A-10 carries.
It's not that DCS isn't scoring hits, they just don't show everything in the debrief.
In short, don't judge yourself by the numbers that DCS presents after your mission. Do yourself a favor and download TacView to see how you are really doing.
