Decathlete Collection - PlayStation 2 - Edit mode, playthrough with events from all games [UHD 4K60]
Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 15: Decathlete Collection is a collection and remake of Decathlete / Athlete Kings, Winter Heat and Virtua Athlete 2K. It contains the events from all three games along with the characters and allows you play the original games or edit a tournament together from all three games. Sounds great in practice, but what you get is a bit of a lazy mash up that doesn't look as good or play quite as well as the original games.
Yes, the Saturn ports do look better and more colourful, than this rather bland update with some rather ugly character models in this new graphics engine. The gameplay doesn't feel quite as tight and even on a digital PS1 pad. Worryingly the Aerial event from Winter Heat also seem to have a major issue, where it is virtual impossible to clear without a rapid fire pad as if you select anything other than a blue difficulty, the push button target becomes far too high. We couldn't clear green let alone red.
Including Virtua Athlete alongside Decathlete seems a bit pointless, as Virtua Athlete includes only seven events and all feature in Decathlete. The gameplay changes are minor at best between the two and the characters from Virtua Athlete are boring and nondescript. This collection seems to use elements from Virtua Athlete's HUD along with the characters portrait art from the original games. It's still fun to play, but the lack of extra content and the fact the missing characters from Decathlete weren't added into Winter Heat and vice versa, shows what a lazy port this is. One for die hard Sega fans, everyone else should get the original Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast releases.
