4Drawing from games such as Baroque, Vambrace is a modern indie take on Rogue Dungeons games. Which see you lead a party of four adventures into the ruins of Icenaire a city that has become walled off my ice. You play Evelia Lyric a traveller who is the lone survivor to pass the ice-wall and live to tell the tale. It's her job to free Icenaire from its fate and defeat the ones behind it.
The game is almost entirely randomly generated from travelling companions to the various routes, trials, traps and enemies you face across the frozen waste. You start your adventure in the hub city Dalearch which acts as your base of operation. Here you recruit party member and purchase items and weapons for the gear ahead.
Each expedition sees you brave a series of areas, before you can confront the boss from that area. Characters have both a health and a vigour bar. Both must be keep up or the character will die. While health diminishes in battle and if you string traps. Vigour decays as you explore, putting you and your party up against the clock, when exploring the surface. Items can only be used at campsites and forges, so restoring and tracking your vigour level is key to staying alive. On top of that you have the Ghost Fog to deal with shown by the Geistometer, once it fill up the areas, is over run with the undead.
Combat is a limited tactical based round system with each character having attack and defense, along with two skills. There's not a lot too it, soundtrack is excellent as is the art and the story tell something a bit more interesting than your standard RPG affair with various fractions in fighting in Dalearch.
Where the game lets itself down is the difficulty and balancing, which still need some work. The game throws players in at the deep end from the start and for a rogue game this is a bad idea as it will put of many players from trying the game.
