A playthrough of Vatical Entertainment's 1999 graphic adventure game for the Game Boy Color, Déjà Vu II: Lost in Las Vegas.

Lost in Las Vegas was bundled alongside a port of the original Déjà Vu for the 2-in-1 compilation cart, Déjà Vu I & II: The Casebooks of Ace Harding.

If you aren't familiar with the first game, A Nightmare Comes True, I highly recommend that one first (see the NES version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac0TM9ffZKI). This game is a direct continuation of the previous game's story.

Adventure fans might recall that the original Déjà Vu (A Nightmare Comes True) was treated to a quality NES port back in 1990, and was among the three of ICOM's four MacVenture games that Kemco brought to the console. A couple of gaming magazines ran pictures of a prototype of its sequel meant for the NES, but beside a few small preview write-ups, nothing else was ever said about the game and it was quickly forgotten.

Back then, many of us didn't know that these games were on other platforms, or that they were several years old by the time the console market got exposed to them - Déjà Vu II saw its first release on the Mac two years before NES games ever got Ace Harding's first adventure! So, while it wasn't new, per se, when the Game Boy Color version appeared, it was great news for console fans that never even knew a sequel existed!

And let me say - this title was definitely a case of "better late than never." It's a direct continuation of the story from the end of the first game - probably the reason that both were included on the cart - and if you played any of the original MacVenture ports, you'll feel right at home here. It looks and plays nearly identically, albeit with a reorganized, streamlined interface to accommodate the smaller screen. The puzzles are even more devious this time, and the story is just as well written, and this time isn't relying on the tired amnesiac protagonist tropes that Déjà Vu did. That elevator button puzzle had me scratching my head forever, that's for sure. You won't blue through this story quite as easily! Since this was done by Kemco, it's reasonable to assume that this port was culled from the what had been developed for the NES prototype. It's a fantastic title, and it fits the Game Boy platform extremely well. If you like adventure games, I can't recommend this one highly enough!

Just make sure you've played the original one first. This one is much easier, and makes much more sense, if you have.

Recorded using shaders in Retroarch for that super-authentic feel!
