Marvel Land (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
123A playthrough of Namco's 1990 platformer for the Sega Genesis, Marvel Land.
Played through on the default difficulty level. Every level is shown in this playthrough - I didn't take any level-skipping warps.
Marvel Land was probably Namco's most successful attempt at doing a Mario-style game when it was first released in the arcades in 1989, and it was easily among the best platformers on the Sega Genesis when it was released a year later. It was largely forgotten about after Sonic was unleashed and took over EVERYTHING, and it's really too bad. Marvel Land is too good of a game to just forget.
You play a dragon prince guy that has to save his stolen woman by running through the titular demented amusement part, kicking ass, playing rock, paper, scissors, and taking names. Though the graphics are scaled back a fair amount from the arcade title and the game suffers from some pretty horrendous slowdown, this is still a pretty good port of a really good-looking title.
There have a great many changes made to the game in the port for the better: there are ten more levels in this version, passwords, and a new style boss fight in this one. Just like any other hard-as-nails late 80s platformer, it really requires that your timing is dead-on. If you jump on something slightly off-center, you will die. There are no "buffer" hits that can be taken here - one hit and you go down. It's a pretty good way to make sure you don't just blindly run through the stages, unless you'd quickly like to be staring at a game over screen.
I remember seeing this featured on a couple of episodes of Nick Arcade (anyone else remember that?) and wanting to play it soooo badly from that. A couple of years later I finally found it at a rental place, and have loved it ever since. Good stuff!
