A playthrough of LJN'S 1994 NES game, The Incredible Crash Dummies.

I remember being totally confused as a kid at the Incredible Crash Dummies phenomenon. I only ever remember seeing them for the longest time in TV ads, and then, seemingly out of nowhere, there were videos, action figures, and yes, a whole slew of video games. They were pretty successful for characters that began life telling America to buckle up.

I never really understood the obsession. I thought they were lame as all get out, but the NES game turned out to be pretty good, all things told! It feels very much made in the mold of European computer games (like most Euro-based console game productions felt at the time) with super colorful, fast scrolling graphics and C64-influenced chiptune music. This game is seriously fast - maybe not quite up to Sonic speeds, but it's quite a sight on the NES - especially with no slowdown at all and very little sprite flicker or breakup.

It's a platformer that has you alternate between two of the dummies. One rides around on a unicycle wheel while the other ventures out on foot. They both have to collect road pilons while avoiding all sorts of strange mechanical hazards, bugs, and goofy stuff. The unicycle stages are particularly interesting in how, if you take too hard of a hit, your head flies off, and the controls are then reversed until you get a new head. Much of the game relies on mastering its sense of momentum. Once you get the hang of it, it's a whole lot of fun, though not terribly challenging.

The Incredible Crash Dummies, no matter how stupid the license is that it's based on, is a damn good title for such a late-gen release.
