Fun House (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
97A playthrough of Hi-Tech Expressions' 1991 NES game, Fun House.
Who else remembers watching the TV show Fun House and its host, J. D. Roth (also the host of GamePro TV) on Fox after school? It was a lot like Double Dare, where kids would compete against one another for prizes. It also instilled in me my love for British Knights - for how often the show talked them up, I can only imagine that BK had sunk a fair amount of money in sponsorship dollars.
Anyways the NES game is, oddly enough, almost exactly like how the show isn't. The PC version mimicked it pretty well, but the NES version has you, as a kid on rollerskates, flying through twelve arena, hitting sequentially numbered targets with tomatoes. Think Smash TV, but more kid friendly and featuring a semi-recognizable picture of JD taunting you between each stage.
The graphics are nice and bright, even if they're a bit heavy on the red/yellow/magenta combo, and do little to evoke the feeling of the show. The music is similarly dissimilar to that that fans of the show would recognize, and generally isn't worth listening to. The game play overall is pretty amusing, fast-paced, and surprisingly difficult in later stages. While I did enjoy the game, I did think that it over stayed its welcome a bit- 12 stages with 6 substages each seemed overkill to me. Especially given how difficult the controls can be to get a handle on.
But hey, if you really get into it, more is probably better, eh?
