Serpent (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Taxan's 1990 action game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Serpent.
This playthrough shows Mode 2 played through at difficulty 1, and Mode 1 played through at difficulty 4. The true ending is shown.
Serpent, or Kakumunja as it was called in Japan, is an odd title, and fairly typical of how atypical many early Game Boy titles tended to be.
Does anyone else remember that old game Nibbles that was on any PC that ran Dos 5.0? I remember we found it at school one day on a classroom computer (an ancient, creaky 286 in English class - probably around 1995 or so?). We stumbled into the Q-basic directory on the hard drive and found Nibbles and Gorillas, both great games for samples of a programming language :) Anyways, Serpent is essentially an upgraded version of Nibbles. You and an enemy snake much trap one another, but this time apparently it is to win a war - the game even gives you hilariously unexpected (and ill-fitting) messages like "We are the Alpha Force!" and "The bitter taste of defeat," like it's trying to be a Schwarzenegger movie.
It's extremely simple - pick up power ups and don't get trapped or hit by any hazards. Be the first to win seven rounds, and you become the "champion of serpents"! If you don't, well, you lose. Obviously.
It's an alright game. The bar is obviously set much higher when you're talking about a dedicated game machine release instead of a free demo with a computer OS, and I think this is what hurts it the most. There just wasn't really enough here to justify being sold as a $30 game pak, but since that's no longer really a concern, you might want to try it.
It's fun and simple, but there's not really enough here to give it any legs. Oh, how I love terrible word plays.
