Demon's Souls (PS3) - Shield Only - Part 2: First Archstones and 4-2
Old Hero's upward slash attack feels so fast and janky in the OG release. I think it's no faster than it is in the remake, I just think his windup animation for it in the remake is more pronounced whereas in the OG he sort of just stands still for a second and then lets it rip. He caught me by surprise with it a couple times. It does so much damage too. He's kind of a menace. If it weren't for the fact you can just disable his AI with the theif's ring I'd say he makes 4-2 the hardest area in the game because most hard bosses (flamelurker, false king) have relatively short and simple areas and most terrible areas (5-2, 1-3) have relatively relaxed boss fights or at least a short cut. 4-2 is a horrible area with no short cut and a hard boss which makes it far and above the hardest area, but the boss has a built in fromsoft approved cheese that makes him trivial so with that in mind 4-2 isn't that bad. I of course don't cheese old hero like that in my playthroughs, I tend to never cheese anything except ceaseless discharge and honestly idk even know if that counts since I view ceaseless discharge's cliff drop similarly to yhorm's stormruler mechanics. Yeah you can fight him without it and it's much harder, but I don't think using it entails cheesing since it's clearly the intended method. I suppose you could make the same argument with Old Hero, but I don't think Old Hero is made to be so ridiculous that you are shoehorned into to cheesing him like ceaseless discharge is, he's certainly one of the harder and more intense bosses in the game, and his HP and damage are some of the highest of any boss making him quite the beefcake for a second archstone boss, but I don't think he's quite on par with ceaseless discharge in terms of just how stupid his stats are and how tedious fighting him without his weakness is. Ceaseless really feels like the devs didn't want you to fight him legit with how high his damage and HP are compared to how little souls he gives and how awkawrd fighitng him normally is. Old Hero on the other hand feels more like a real boss fight that wasnt meant to be fought and the thiefs ring was just an afterthought or a mercy mechanic since he is a bit tougher than most bosses after an excruciating area.
