phalanx is balls, thankfully I got the hardstone drop from a hoplite and was able to make my heater shield +2 for that dumb fight. Without a +2 shield I think it takes a 5th hit to kill the hoplites meaning you can't kill them in one stamina bar. That doesn't make the fight impossible or anything, just even more time consuming and healing resource intensive.
