Demon's Souls SL1 NG+5 PBWT "Easy Mode" - Part 17 - 5-2 & 5-3: Dirty Colossus and Maiden Astraea

Dirty Colossus goes so smoothly here that I rush into the Maiden Astraea fight thinking, "Well this fight is so easy nothing can go wrong". This is a great demonstration of the #1 rule of Demon's Souls: Don't forget that you're still playing Demon's Souls.
1:00 I start 5-2. I forgot to do my normal stats check. I do show off my Rings of Sincere Prayer, so you'll just have to take my word that this is a continuation from the last video and is still SL1 Pure Black.
1:26 Believe it or not, this guy may have killed me more than any other single enemy in the entire game. He's very difficult to get past on this narrow bridge with his giant flaming spear, which I can't block with a shield at this point because the fire damage is scaled too high. It's possible to run up and poke him before he can attack you with a fast weapon like the Crescent Falchion, but I only have about a 50/50 success rate with that approach. This Soul Remains strategy still isn't flawless, but probably works about three out of four times. If he's still causing you grief, just use Second Chance at the start of the level.
2:10 This mosquito perfectly blocks the pathway. He might not if you take the Thief Ring off, but I know I'm going to need it for the run to the fog gate, so I don't want to bother with that. The Northern Regalia R2 attack handles the situation, as long as you roll right after in case the other mosquito tries to get you.
2:26 I taunt a deliberate Poison Cloud out of this guy to speed Hyper Mode along for video purposes. This isn't really necessary and I recommend just running straight to the boss's fog gate and waiting on Makoto. But this method is pretty safe too. The only added danger is deactivating the compounded health drain in time.
3:34 I begin the Dirty Colossus fight. This strategy isn't foolproof, and I only ever got to maybe a 50/50 success rate with it. Still, courtesy of the excellent 5-2 shortcut, having to take multiple cracks at him really isn't a big deal. The key is to keep firing Fire Spray as much as possible, because it is also your best defense. If random fly swarms bounce over and try to approach you, there's a decent chance Fire Spray will kill them before they kill you. You can see this happen for me at 4:03. This means the most dangerous part of the fight is the first time you run out of MP and need an Old Spice, for me at 4:11.
4:30 So at this point I had completed the boss fight in under 5 minutes, and I was thinking, "This is a short video, I should tack something else on. Maybe a shopping trip." That's when I decided instead I'd just also knock Maiden Astraea out in under 5 minutes, and have a quick 10-minute, two boss video.
That's not how things are going to go...

10:00 This is a nice recovery on my part, but normally this is not where you want to do this from. Instead you want to continue along the upper cliff face, kill all of the worshipers, and then fire your arrows from there. Then you can run all the way back around along the upper cliff and get to Astraea's soul without all of the extra hassle.

12:10 Retrieving Astraea's soul. At least I demonstrate here that after you kill her she remains dead even if you have to leave or die, and that you can retrieve Garl's gear via this method. Really useful in normal runs where you want the Dark Silver Shield, one of the best in the game.

14:02 Well that's finally over. From here I just commit a couple of suicides in a foolish manner. I should have just went back to the beginning of 5-1, doing it here forces me to keep retrieving my souls. So, mistake #6.
After those are done, I equip Second Chance and Soul Ray to prepare for the return to World 1. See you there!
