Demon's Souls SL1 NG+5 PBWT "Easy Mode" - Part 11 - 3-1: Fool's Idol
Welcome to Demon's Souls, The World (ora ora ora).
No skills were used in the making of this series. =)
There's actually a lot to unpack here. First, I want to talk about this level as a whole. 3-1 is pretty straightforward, but it's made deceptively complex by the fact that most of the area is prison cell blocks, all of which looks the same. I personally have found that watching other videos of people running this level is very confusing and not particularly helpful to a beginner, so instead I'm going to do things slightly differently. Every time I do a major checkpoint in the level, instead of backtracking, I'm going to warp out and run to the next checkpoint from the beginning. Hopefully this will help you learn the level's layout, for those who don't already know it. This should also make things easier if you're trying to figure out the next step you need to take after an unintended death.
1:00 The first run of the level begins. We need the key that unlocks the door just to the right of the archstone's cell. My paths are all pretty safe, but if you're still learning routes you might want to use Second Chance here. You don't really need the Eternal Warrior's Ring.
1:10 The enemies here are strong to magic but really hate fire, so we'll be using the Dragon Longsword +5 rather than the Northern Regalia. As long as you try to stay behind these guys, they're pretty harmless enemies. If you stand in front of them and they start casting a spell, though, they're completely uninterruptible.
2:29 With the first set of keys we need in hand, we start the level over.
3:07 Now we need the keys to the 4th floor.
4:04 With the 4th floor keys in hand we start over again. I use a Shard of Archstone here because the exit is a little bit faster, and I'm not sure if the cthulu-head heard me on my way in or not (he didn't seem to this time, but he often does). It's also completely fine to just die here after grabbing the keys, obviously.
4:33 Now we need to head to the ballista area and grab the Warden's Key.
5:48 and 6:13 There are two places in this level where the path splits three ways. For both of them, you want to take the middle route when going for the boss. At the first split, the third path leads to Sage Freke. At the second one, it leads to Lord Rydell.
6:54 Grab the Warden's Key. It's also fairly easy to just roll through the arrows here and get behind the ballista, especially with Second Chance, which cuts out one run cycle here. But I decided it required too much "skill" for this series. Instead, we'll leave again.
7:30 Now I'll show you the normal way to get behind the ballista. From this point we won't be killing many more enemies, just a couple of dredgelings.
8:47 I forget that I can't move these guys with my roll and need to use the DLS. It almost gets me killed by the Black Phantom here.
10:03 So this is one of the dirtiest tricks in Demon's Souls, in my opinion... this is the only wooden door in the game that opens. And if you don't figure that out (say, because you've seen EVERY OTHER wooden door), the boss is immortal. A lot of people write Fool's Idol off as one of the easiest, jokiest bosses in the whole series, but I think they forget how much of a stumbling block she can be on your first run if you don't know the game already (or use the internet for tips).
10:18 I don't need this key, it just allows you to save Sage Freke if you care to. No sense in leaving it, though, since it's so far out of the way if I were to change your mind for some reason.
11:03 And now I make the run to the boss. I considered setting up Second Chance for this segment and probably should have, since it's pretty easy to get sniped by Fool's Idol. But I had a really nice rhythm going and just decided to ride it out instead.
12:58 Don't forget about Baby here.
13:32 I enter the boss chamber. I use the Ring of Magical Sharpness so I can two-shot the dredgelings while waiting for Hyper Mode to finish off. They give me a little bit more trouble than they usually do for some reason, and I forget to watch my health and come literally one tick from dying. Phew!
15:45 Fool's Idol herself. I'm not sure, if I had let the Eternal Warrior's Ring completely fill my stamina bar, if I could have one-cycled her or not. But I do know that the DLS+5 substantially out-damages the Northern Regalia here, from my testing.
16:10 I got an amazing draw for the second wave spawn here, with the real Fool's Idol being right on top of me. You can easily identify the real one by the fact that she fires a huge blast, more akin to Soul Arrow, while the fakes fire a tiny Soul Ray. I fire a couple of Hyper Mode Lava Bow arrows at one of the fakes anyway, just to show how you would normally clean them up. But truthfully, the easiest "no-skill" way to win this fight really is to simply fight her repeatedly until you get a lucky draw like this.
With the boss down, I do my 2 Body Form suicides in 3-2.
