DFFOO [JP][Act 4 Ch 2 part 2][Alt run] FFXV guest party members vs newest Shinryu w/Aranea FR
I first wanted to just pitch this team against bosses that have many turns, then I tried them with the newest Shinryu. I know they are potent but I wasn't expecting them to finish this even faster than the first run lol.
This is actually the slower runs because Cor went a bit crazy when the boss targeted ALL. The fastest I had was sub 9 mins.
Context and Idea:
Aranea FR gives 40% bonus whenever a break happens. It can only happens once a turn, but off-turn breaks also count. Before this, some of the really good combos are Aranea + rebreakers like Caius, Dorgann, Vayne or trap/off-turn attackers like Minwu, Cor and Trey if the boss moves alot.
Now since Iris BT provides 0 ATK/0 DEF and most importantly 0 mBRV debuff aura, bosses would recover every other turn, which is even faster than Ardyn FR's passive. That means if you break them "wrongly", using Cor's preemptive strike would break them as they move and push their turns behind their partners, extending their stay in the turn queue. Cor's attack still triggers, effectively netting you extra procs and harnessing Aranea FR's off-turn bonus.
On top of that, the 0 ATK/0 mBRV also ensures that boss attacks become largely harmless, unless they are using HP gravity attacks. You can safely let them move for a while, as Iris BT has a 8T duration.
Situations where this can get even better:
If you put this team against a boss with many turns bundles up together, the process would be really long and you would engage your FT turns with a much more potent initial HP bonus sprint.
If you put them against bosses that endlessly use AOE attacks, you can farm 3 Cor procs every time they move.
Other situations:
This method also works with counters or follow-ups. The dynamic is a bit different since those come AFTER boss turns. You would still be able to break them and get the off-turn bonus from Aranea FR, but in general they would stay not as long as using preemptive strikes. You can sort of achieve this without Iris if the boss is one of those "recover from break whenever they move" types, but Iris would allow you to consistently set this up if they don't use or don't have those attacks.
Tricks and Notes:
1. Throwing extra preemptive strikes or traps using CAs may be detrimental to this method, as they would break the boss before Cor moves and they don't count towards Aranea's FR bonuses.
2. Aranea FR makes her breaks delay targets by an extra turn and her EX lets her go twice if she breaks something. Since this method lets you harvest off-turn bonuses, this is kind of an undesirable trait. Fortunately we have several ways to circumvent this.
(a) Let Aranea move enough times to drop her EX buff before going into FR
(b) Take off Aranea's speed passives
(c) Use her LD while paired up with Cor on a target that has recovered from break. Her LD does not naturally unbreak a target before the attack, and her LD buff would not be activated if the target has already recovered from break. Since Cor's preemptive strike triggers first, he would break the target in her place. Therefore she would not break her target, nor would she push the target by 2T because of it.
These measures allow you to have full control when and where you want the enemy turns to be.
Honestly, Aranea FR is 8 months old (and visible on the GL calender already) and it still works wonders. I have found its uses here and there even in the FR echo era. It is just really practical, fun and invites a lot of potential character combos. The off-turn bonus and 50% extra HP dmg limit cap increase are still relevant to this day and she does not even have a BT nor FR echo yet. I still think her FR is one of the my all time favourite FRs.
