The snooty usher was meant to have a much bigger role! Sam Raimi initially had a script written for a fourth instalment in his Spider-Man franchise before the movie was cancelled, and amongst those plans was a role for Bruce Campbell who played the usher who turns Peter Parker away from seeing Mary Jane's performance. The usher says the line “it helps maintain the illusion” because in the fourth movie it was planned that he would make a return as the master of illusions himself, Mysterio.
