240The Santa speech scene almost ended up getting taken out.It proved to be very controversial, and the executives insisted that Joe take it out because they weren’t sure if it was clear enough if it was to be funny or sad. Joe refused to take it out since he felt like it represented the movie as a whole. Executive producer Steven Spielberg wasn’t a fan of the scene either, but he decided to leave it in since he saw the movie as Joe’s project alone. Joe was responsible for the no bright lights rule too since they had trouble with the special effects for the puppets. With keeping them in the dark, they were able to camouflage the issue. He did the same thing in 1981 with The Howling.
