There are a number of returning characters from the Lord of the Rings trilogy that never appeared in The Hobbit book. Frodo, Saruman, Galadriel, and Legolas never appear in The Hobbit, and Radagast is also another character that never appears in the book. Radagast is mentioned in the Hobbit book. He also appears in The Lord of the Rings books, but in the films, he is removed. This movie also marks the first Middle-earth movie that has no humans speaking from the race of Men. While there are some humans that appear in the opening flashback, they are silent characters. While wizards are considered a branch of the race of Men, they are not strictly classified as such.
