Hey players, DJay here with a new PlayStation longplay on one of Taito's popular arcade shmups, RayStorm.

Description of the game:

RayStorm (Layer Section II on the Japanese exclusive Sega Saturn port) is a vertical scrolling bulletstorm shmup by Taito Corporation released in arcades in August 1996 on Taito's FX-1B system board, being the second entry in the Ray trilogy and the first game in the series to render graphics in 3D. It was ported over on the PlayStation in January 1997 and the Sega Saturn in October 1997. It was included in Taito Legends 2 alongside other Taito games in 2006, re-released on PlayStation 3 in June 2008, on XBOX 360 in 2010 and in a compilation of Ray'z Arcade Chronology in March 2023 and RayStorm X RayCrisis HD collection in June 2023. The R-Gray fighters appear again in RayCrisis as playable ships (Home ports only). The story of the game is set in the month of August, which was the month of the game's release in the arcades.

The story of the game is set in an alternative universe of RayForce. In the year of 2219 A.D., space travel became possible. Nations of Earth joined forces, humanity expanded throughout the solar system and a colony has being established. To ensure peace and security, the Star Federation was established to control all of the local governments in the colony. A century later, Earth quickly expanded the colony to Orion and under strict martial law, 20 space colonies were established due to the difficulty of security maintenance in each sector. However, one rebellious faction known as Secilia Federation begun transferring all of Earth's inhabitants to the colonies and announced the intention of destroying Earth and sent a strike force to obliterate Planet Earth. To begin a counter attack on Secilia Federation's plan to destroy Earth, they dispatch a new space craft under the codename "R-Gray." 13 of the R-Gray space fighters were developed and features a highly experimental weapon system. With the inhabitants' lives at stake, Operation: RayStorm commences.

Although playing similarly to its predecessor, there are additional features including a selection of 2 different R-Gray ships, each with their own features:
R-Gray 1: Wide firing range and a targeting system that fires 8 laser shots
R-Gray 2: Concentrated laser and a targeting system that fires a thunder laser, tracking down up to 16 enemies, first striking the enemy or enemy part that was locked on first and destroying the rest one by one.
Once selecting either of them, the player proceeds to challenge a course of 8 stages (If played on training mode in the home ports, players will be limited to clearing only 4 stages). Red colored enemies drop shot upgrades and extra laser shots. Laser shots not only destroys enemies, but part of the stage environment to allow for some higher chains or for even more damage on enemies that take more than one hit at a specific part, a full lock on attack can be performed. The more enemies there are locked on, the higher the score. Another new feature is the special attack that damages enemies caught within proximity. Once used, it can be refilled by destroying enemies and fills faster when creating huge chains or it is completely refilled if the ship is destroyed. Getting hit by projectiles or colliding with aerial enemies destroys the ship and reduces firepower.

Pilot the R-Gray space fighters and save Planet Earth from Secilia Federation's invasion.
