DJay 95 Plays: Akai Katana (Arcade) Longplay
4Hey players, DJay here with another challenging bullet hell shmup longplay on one of CAVE's hidden gems, Akai Katana.
Description of the game:
Akai Katana is a horizontal scrolling bullet hell shmup by CAVE for the arcades in August 2010 exclusively in Japan. It was later ported on the XBOX 360 in May 2012 worldwide with additional features and under the new label of Akai Katana Shin, and another worldwide re-release on the 8th generation ports including PS4, XBOX ONE, Nintendo Switch and Windows in December 2022. This is CAVE's fourth and final horizontal scrolling shmup, after Progear and the Deathsmiles series.
In a parallel universe resembling Japan's Taishō period, people had uncovered powerful Blood Swords, the titular Akai Katana. Human sacrifices were required to unleash the weapon's devastating power and were used to crush neighboring countries. However, all bloodshed and power gained through those human sacrifices involving small families made swordsmen reconsider their choice. Now, a small band of rebels team up, utilizing their fighter planes and powerful swords to take down the tyrannical empire for good.
The gameplay system is mostly reminiscent to that of 2001 Progear. Players select between 3 pairs of rebels, varying in attack capabilities and must take on a grueling course of 6 stages (There are 7 in Non-Origins mode in the XBOX 360 port). The final stage, which is a battle against the game's true final boss, is accessible if the player manages to survive up to the 5th boss (6th in the XBOX 360 port) without dying. There are 2 types of attacks that can be alternated in between depnding on the situation it requires. Both also affect the player's ship speed. Destroying large enemies will drop energy chips that fill up your guage. When completely full, players can activate the Phantom mode, powering up their main weapon and inflicting extensive damage. When in this mode, players become invulnerable to bullets and cause them to bounce off the barrier, but only when they are not firing or using a laser, which will make them vulnerable to bullets. Destroying enemies in this form will drop coins that increase the score. Phantom form lasts a temporary period as indicated by a timer located where the player is positioned, after which the player reverts to the normal form. The larger the coins, the more points it will be worth. If the player finds themselves in a rather more complex situation, bombs can be used to clear every bullet on the screen. The player's life is indicated by a life guage, displayed by the yellow bar. If the player gets hit by a laser attack, their energy will deplete until it reaches zero, unlike the rest of the projectiles that result in instant death. Getting hit by a laser until your energy is completely drained, any projectile or contact with an enemy results in losing a life.
