DJay 95 Plays: Ridge Racer (PlayStation) Longplay
4Hey players, DJay here with a new PlayStation longplay on a racing game of the 90's, Ridge Racer. Also, this was made to celebrate the game's 30th anniversary.
Description of the game:
Ridge Racer is an arcade racing simulator game by Namco released in arcades in October 1993 on the Namco System 22 system board. It was later ported over on the PlayStation in December 1994 in Japan and in September 1995 in international regions. There are numerous references to several other Namco games present in the form of cameos and decals, including Mappy, Galaga, Xevious, Bosconian, Baraduke, NebulasRay (PlayStation version only), etc. Billboards of Cyber Sled can be spotted, a pure coincidence since both games came out the same year. The PlayStation port features Galaxian as a mini-game before starting the game. It is Namco's first ever arcade game to feature texture mapped graphics. This, along with its competitor, Sega's Daytona USA, serve as an inspiration to Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo series. It was originally intended to be an F-1 racing game like Namco's 1982 Pole Position, 1987 Final Lap and 1988 Winning Run.
The objective of the game is simple. Players select a course and choose between a selection of 13 cars (8 are unlockable in the PlayStation port only if the player successfully beats the Galaga mini-game before the game starts and 1 is unlockable after clearing all 8 courses, including 4 extra courses), each with different characteristics. They will then take on a course against 11 opponents (1 opponent in duels and 2 in the extra time trial) and clear each lap to finish the race. At the start of the race, a player can launch themselves if they manage to keep the needle close to the redline or end up getting a slow start. Along the way, collisions with other cars or the barriers must be avoided to achieve better times and better positions. Every race has a time limit set to complete the race and can be extended by reaching checkpoints. Failure to reach a checkpoint within the allotted time results in disqualification.
