DJay 95 Plays: Solar Assault (Arcade) Longplay
6Hey players, DJay here with a new arcade shmup longplay on a rail shooter of the late 90's, Solar Assault.
Description of the game:
Solar Assault is an arcade rail shooter by Konami released exclusively in Japanese arcades in July 1997 on the Konami GTI Club hardware. An updated version, Solar Assault Revised, was released in both Japan and North American regions later that same year with several new changes. It is a spin-off title of the Gradius series taking place within the Salamander series continuity. This is the first and only Gradius game in the series where gameplay is rendered in full 3D polygonal graphics as opposed to 2D sprites. It is the only game not to feature a speed-up in the power meter due to the speed being fully dependent on the control sensitivity. The game marks the first appearance of a newcomer space fighter, the WC-672H Alpinia. The Alpinia, later appears as a playable DLC ship mecha in Otomedius Excellent, piloted by Strarf, a character from the Busou Shinki series. The space theme from the original Gradius is heard in the game's ending theme.
In the year 6852 A.D., 12 years after the Third Bacterian War (the events of Gradius III), a mobile planet-like fortress was unknowingly constructed in space, moving towards planet Gradius. Several planets disappeared out of nowhere, possibly warped into a hyperspace zone. An unknown enemy group has their eyes set on stealing a new powerful fighter, the WC-672H Alpinia. Now, the WC-672H Alpinia takes off into space, with the aid of 2 other space fighters, BP-592A Vic Viper and the LS-379G Lord British, to wipe out this alien race.
Players have a choice of selecting between 3 different fighters, each with their own weapon array. The second choice is between auto and manual types. Auto allows for automatic weapon upgrade selections while manual lets the player choose weapons to upgrade. There is a total of 6 stages. Just like the other entries in the series, players must maneuver the ship shooting down enemies that appear while dodging bullets and collisions with enemies or terrain. Shooting enemy formations or red enemies will yield a power capsule for upgrading or switching between weapons. A new feature is the charge attack (only available with a laser equipped) that inflicts heavy damage. At the end of each stage, a large boss must be destroyed by attacking their weak points. During boss fights, players have a limited time to destroy them before it expires, during which the player will not be awarded points. Only a shield will protect the player from incoming fire. If taken enough hits, it can be recharged by collecting enough power capsules. Getting shot or colliding with enemies and terrain will destroy the ship and cost a life. Completing the game once ends it. (Only the Japanese versions of the game must be completed twice to access the ending.)
