It seems Ninja Theory gave in to the negative fan outrage and actually installed a button in the game that, when pressed, makes not-Dante die instantly with big red words that say "FAILED!".

Just kidding, this is another side effect of escaping from secret missions. This time I escaped from "A Day in Hell", the Mission 17 secret mission. Somehow, with miraculously low odds, I made it back to the main level even without visual cues.

Infinite jumping for a while, Dante respawned back inside the level where the flames were now inactive. Dante was also immortal, as expected. The most curious thing was that if I now pressed select to start the secret mission, Dante would die instantly. Hard to say why... Perhaps the furnace flames weren't actually inactive - perhaps they were invisible and permanent and everywhere, and in accordance to the secret mission rules, Dante would fail as soon as he got hit by the ambient flames. Who knows. You'd have to come here without immortal Dante to be certain.

Regardless, it was interesting to play with a button that allowed you to die (or "FAIL") wherever you wanted. Alas, failing in the middle of a short cutscene in which Dante climbs up a ledge caused him to permanently freeze in place. Not sure if I could've broken out of this freeze with DT, as I didn't have enough power to activate DT and the item menu was disabled during this time as well. So there was nothing left for me to do than stand around and fail endlessly.

...and thus ended my once-in-a-lifetime glitch of escaping Mission 17 secret mission and actually finding back to the main level afterwards.
