After releasing the awesome TMNT adventures Fall of the Foot Clan and Back from the sewers for the Nintendo Gameboy, Konami were definitely on fire and really helped keep the momentum of turtles mania going in the early nineties. A third outing seemed unlikely. I mean after all, how do you follow up on Back from the sewers which to my mind is a wholly faithful depiction of the cartoons series and comics and has just the right balance of challenge and fun packed into it? The answer is they opted instead to turn the formula on it’s head and give players a new gameplay style which borrows from the successful Metroid series but also adds in a smattering of RPG levelling up and puzzle elements. TMNT 3 Radical Rescue see’s the Shredder Kidnap Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Vivacious channel 9 reporter April O Neil and Splinter whilst Michelangelo was out collecting a pizza delivery. Returning home and spying the TV still on, Shredder appears and tells Mikey that if he wants to rescue them then he is to go to an abandoned mine on the outskirts of New York. This time around the familiar side scrolling beat em up stage by stage action has gone and in it’s place a massive area with multiple paths, rooms, locked doors and shutters and tons of foot soldiers, robots, lasers and hazards. So you assume the role of Michelangelo and must work your way through the danger to firstly rescue your fellow turtles. However Radical rescue doesn’t tell you where to go, or indeed what to do and it’s left up to the player to navigate the map and try and find the right path. You will notice right away that certain areas cannot be accessed yet and this is because Mikey and each turtle that you rescue has a special ability which is essential to progressing further in the mine. Michelangelo can jump and use his nun chucks to float allowing him to slowly descend downwards, go across spike pits and platforms, Leonardo can use his kitana blades to slice through breakable floors, Raphael can access narrow alcoves by literally popping into his shell and moving into them and Donatello can climb walls. So if you go to one of the areas that requires a certain skill and you haven’t rescued that turtle then you can’t go down that path yet. Whilst this new Metroid esc area is jam packed with enemies and confusing routes its not as large as you would think and just requires a little bit of trial and error first time around. Unlike the previous games you can’t just slice and dice your weay through quickly as not only are the enemy patterns dangerous but also plentiful. Not to mention that this time they respawn if you move even a fraction of the screen away from where you killed them. You can die easily here. So, you will need to slow things down and work carefully. You start off with a small amount of health, but this can be increased by finding hearts. Plus, whole pizzas’ are located throughout the mines which will replenish your health and be carried in reserve if you all ready have a full health bar as extra health. Unfortunately, you can only ever have one of these.
