Having reviewed both Double Dragon reviews on my channel and really enjoying them. I figured its time to have a look at the third entry in the series. Double Dragon 3 the Sacred Stones was developed by Technos and published by Acclaim in 1991. This time the Lee borthers are on a quest to rescue Marion who once again has been kidnapped by a mysterious gang. After meeting a fortune teller called Hiruko, they are informed that in order to get her back they need to retrieve 3 sacred stones from around the world. Sounds reasonable right? So you will have to once again step onto the mean streets and fighting round the world visting China, Japan, Italy and Egypt. What is it with kidnapped females on the NES you would think they would take measures to prevent this happening each time? Anyway the tried and tested formula has been severely altered and now Billy Lee only starts out with just one life and increasingly difficult enemies which means that death is pretty much a guarantee right away. Billy however can defeat two particular bosses on his quest and after battle will agree to join him. Players can then choose to fight as any of them at any time. This now translates as 3 lives. Once your small team has been defeated then you get 1 measly continue and then a game over. This was going to be a real problem for this review. Luckily though I have my little friend the game genie and with a handy dandy invicibility code I can at least have a look to see if Double Dragon 3 gets any better or worse. I wish I could say that it does improve but again everything that made the last two beat em ups a success has been removed. Gone is the fast and ferocious adrenaline pumping action. The enemies are pretty generic and just don’t stand out. There’s no familiar abobo’s, Linda’s or shadow bosses and it just feels like a really lacklustre affair. It’s a shame because the graphics and music are pretty good. I will say that they lack the divert of thee 2nd and 1st adventures but it looks and moves like its predecessors. Technos have also added in a run move. Simply by tapping either left or right a couple of times Billy will now dash in that direction. Other then that its business as usual trying to beat down wave upon wave of martial arts maniacs. Anyone who has gone into his review thinking how hard can this game actually be will have their curiosity answered. Without any kind of cheat device or codes Billy Lee barely leaves the first room and his energy bar starts to get severely run down that death can occur almost right away. You might get lucky and survive a little further but the odds are very low that you’ll be able to complete the first stage without dying uless you’re a double dragon 3 virtuoso. Billy will be able to use weapons that have been dropped by the gang members which provide a little bit of defence but not much.
