Stepping out of the shadows comes Batman Vengeance developed by Ubi Soft Montreal in conjunction with Warner Bros and DC comics. Released in 2001 and based off of the hugely successful animated series The new Batman Adventures, Batman Vengeance puts you in the shoes of the Dark Knight as you works your way through 5 interactive episodes featuring not only the original voice cast reprising their roles for the game but also the games visuals characters, music and graphical style look just like the cartoon. The game is a pseudo 3D adventure that combines several genres such as puzzling, combat, platforming, driving and flying around Gotham City unravelling the story and trying to thwart several villains such as the Joker, Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze.
The games main selling points are that it promises a fast paced adventure game in full 3D and a staggering array of gameplay modes and weapons. However what we actually get is almost anything but.
Firstly the games levels are at times a confusing mess. Whilst each one looks impressive and retains the gothic Batman look, the simplest obstacles the game expects you to be able to deal with quickly is a stress induced chore and often causes bewilderment and confusion. Take the first stage for example now its here that the caped crusader must prowl the rooftops of Gotham looking for a kidnapped mother and son. At various points Batman must Bat grapple when he sees the bat icon. I followed the path and got stuck within the first hour of the game as there wasn’t anywhere else I could go. There was no more symbols. I tried everything to try and progress and saw several roof tops that seemed way to far away and with the lack of clues and the controls which ill get into later Batman would fall to his death time and time again. This went on for four hours I kid you not. Apparently, I needed to go to the very edge of this gargoyle statue and jump and glide to this part here. Believe me it took me many many attempts. Or how about Poison Ivy’s plant filled stage. Where your supposed to jump across a few see saw like mushrooms which are also extremely slippy and then try and bat grapple up a flight of stairs. Now these two examples I have given sdo not look that difficult and logically in a good 3D platform game they would be no problem. Why are these such big issues in Batman Vengeance? Well, The camera is just terrible and often wont follow Batman around properly, the controls are awkward, clunky, sometimes unresponsive and way to sensitive for their own good. Trying to move him forward in a straight line becomes a herculean task and jumping from ledge to ledge is a lottery as even with the simplest jumps you need to glide. Sometimes Batman just wont make it or refuses to grab onto a ledge. Using the latter example with the mushrooms. I finally made it to the last part of the section and bat grappled to the stairwell and I tried walking up the stairs and fell off back to the ground. Because of how sensitive Batman Controls, he makes these big moves and I had to tap up slowly just to get him out of this situation and into the next part of the stage. Also there are hidden gaps here that you can’t see right near what you think is the wall.
