Super Mario Maker Online has some of the worst lag in modern day online gaming. This is because SMM2 uses a Peer to Peer network for the online service. The speed of your online game can only go as fast as the slowest connection.

Lag is created when there is latency in a connection. Even if a Nintendo Switch is connected to a network with 50 or even 100MB/s download and upload speed, there could be lag due to latency built into a wifi connection. When using wifi, it just takes longer for the internet connection to get to the switch and back and it is VERY noticeable.

Using a hard wired ethernet connection SHOULD help fix the latency and lag. The only problem is that being on a peer to peer network, your multiplayer game will only be as fast as the slowest player. When you play online with 4 players, it is highly likely that ONE of them will be on Wifi. The nintendo switch is just so portable that it is not likely to get a game with 4 people all on a hard wired connection.

Latency happens when there is a delay between the network and the console. High latency means there is a lot of time between information going from your console through the internet. This can be fixed in a couple of ways:
1. You can get closer to your wireless router. Less distance means less time information has to travel through the air and less latency.
2. Hare wire your ethernet cable to your nintendo switch dock. This will reduce latency as much as possible but will only work in docked mode.

I found that the Ugreen Ethernet adapter works best when there are less players. Mario Tennis Aces played WAY better, night and day difference when using the ethernet adapter. Super Mario Maker 2 was not noticeably better and I think that is because you have to connect to 4 people and your game session will only be as good as the person with the highest (worst) latency.

If you want to pick up a Ugreen ethernet adapter and try this out for yourself you can pick it up from amazon here: https://amzn.to/2XZJgji
