Donkey Kong (Atari 2600 version)
3Going back to the vintage Atari 2600 again, we have Nintendo's first major game that debuted Mario and the mighty Donkey Kong (one of my favorites), simply called "Donkey Kong", an arcade game from 1981. Simply put, DK, long before Donkey Kong Country on SNES came around to reform him, and even before Super Mario Bros, was the original villain of Mario before Bowser, and he kidnapped Pauline - Mario's girl before Princess Peach, and he has to save her from the powerful ape.
Because this version is the 2600's, the clear hardware limitations of the '70s console only show the first and last levels of the arcade and there are no cutscenes. It was released in 1982.
Fun fact: Donkey Kong was inspired by King Kong, Beauty and the Beast, and especially Popeye.
Rareware in the DKC series claimed Cranky Kong to be the DK in this game, but I do not believe that at all, as that wasn't said directly by Nintendo at the time, and the Game Boy version already gave the trademark tie. To me, ALL games having the character is the Donkey Kong we love.
