I had never played Donkey Kong Jr. until playing it for my channel. I think it's a pretty good game for it's time. I loved the classic sound effects, and I can see how in many ways it's using the same game engine as the first game, but with new mechanics added for climbing ropes. The climbing aspect can be hard to get used to. It's not as intuitive as simply jumping. However, once you get used to them, the game becomes easier than the original Donkey Kong. Most of the hitboxes on enemies are extremely generous. The only hiccups I ran into was falling through the edges of platforms and fall off of some vines when I should have been able to grab them. All around a decent early game for the NES.

It was interesting seeing the jump board in this game on the second level. In the first game, those things were a stage hazard on the 75m level, but here it is used to jump a wide gap. I also think it's interesting that the roles of Mario and Donkey Kong are reversed from the first game.
