Popeye (NES) Playthrough (4 Loops)
Popeye, the game that Donkey Kong was originally supposed to be. It has a lot in common with Donkey Kong. The main difference is that you can't jump. This means you have to use stairs and ladders to ascend to higher floors. You're large adversary, in this case Bluto, actually comes after you instead of staying at the top of the stage. He is actually quite versatile. He can reach for you when on the floor above or below you. He can even jump down to a lower floor with a slamming move. The goal is to collect the falling objects being dropped by Olive Oyl at the top of the stage.
I don't like this game. I think it sucks. Not being able to jump puts you at a major disadvantage. I think the biggest problem is that Bluto is just too unfair. He cheats. He's programmed to calculate when to hit you as you pass him perfectly. Even if you try to bait him, he will just keep doing it over and over again until he eventually gets you. The hitbox around him is also larger than his body. You can't climb stairs or ladders if he's anywhere nearby or it will count a hit. I've even had one time where after I tried to drop down to the floor below, I was pulled back upwards into Bluto just because he was nearby on the other side of the gap. It's also insulting that Bluto can just walk across the gaps without falling down, but you can't. Very bad and unfair game.
