Donkey Kong NES Arcade Accurate Port in Development
Very recently, a talented individual released a Donkey Kong port to the NES which strives to be 100% accurate to the original arcade, or as close as possible within the NES's limitations. I made a recording of the ROM as running through my EverDrive N8 and my Analogue Nt Mini through its S-Video connection.
This port only runs in the vertical monitor orientation, a.k.a. the "tate" mode. This means that if you are running the game on a monitor or TV, you will have to rotate it 90 degrees to the right to see screen as it was intended. Through VirtuaDub & AviSynth I have tried to recreate the proper aspect ratio and orientation.
The port has all the animations, enemies and obstacles and full sound effects. It uses the U.S. level progression (barrels, rivets, barrels, spring, rivets, barrels, cement, spring, rivets...) You only get one credit. The ROM supports battery backed saves for your high scores. It does not yet support two players and the author hopes to improve on the flickering and support expansion controllers in the Famicom Expansion port.
I play through the port twice. The first time is a straight playthrough with the real NES's built-in limitations. The NES can only display eight sprites per line, which as you can see is a major issue with this port. However, the Nt Mini has a sixteen sprites per line mode, and I activate it in the second playthrough. When activated, almost all the flicker goes away.
I originally uploaded a video last week showcasing the demo, but I was viewing the game through the capture card's software preview, which is horrifically laggy. I was criticized for having terrible playing skills, I could not get past the first level. Here I hope I have done more justice to the game.
