flashlights actually serving a purpose challenge (IMPOSSIBLE?)

REVIEW
_________________________

It's such a peculiar thing, being a "let's player" in 2023. I strive to engage in a variety of titles but I often find it jarring that I now play games that around a decade ago, I enjoyed as a viewer from popular content creators like HarshlyCritical and Markiplier in the early-mid 2010's. Now as a grown adult and wanting to build my own image of sorts, I now reach into the cookie jar myself and dabble in curious titles such as Nox Timore.

I overlooked this bit a part once the game was underway but it seems the whole premise of this game is a nightmare sequence. Most likely a sense of torment from the mannequins, the narration of imprisoned feelings from the envelopes, the manifestations, all embody negative energy but only at surface value. Since we know nothing of the main protagonist, it's left to interpretation.

Gameplay overall seems like a walking horror simulator with the occasional item pickup but I appreciated the attempts at horror, despite somewhat cheesy undertones. Traditional jump-scare tropes are used but diverse and an effective unsettling ambience of quiet creepiness, interchanging layouts and enveloping darkness certainly helps. I like when I can just immerse myself in a "haunted-house" simulator where I can lose myself to the horror without worrying too much about story or plot.

It's becoming a cliché at this point that flashlights serve as much purpose as bumping around in the dark since I could barely see anything ahead of me. I know it added to the horror aspect of the game but from a technical/interactive standpoint, it can get annoying not having enough visibility. Games flip flop on this all the time and it'd be nice to find a sweet spot.

From what I remember with playthroughs of this game series back then, there was a certain "meminess" with how silly and nonsensical it got with every subsequent release but from the remake's standpoint, it worked pretty well in what it tried to do. It's better to enjoy the game as an experience than looking for some riveting tale of angst and misery. For 15-20 minutes of my time, it was very enjoyable and I may very well touch on Timore Redo in the future.
