Bugs Bunny in shambles | Bucky's Grounds
actually getting scared in a scary game, say it ain't so!

It's not every day I come across a game in a popular genre that addresses horror in a fresh new way. When horror is cliché or relegated to emphasize gameplay, it's nice to see an approach not done often that really sells the experience.
I imagine this game is a teaser for the more fully fleshed out game coming out soon on Steam. It seems to infer supernatural elements involving Bucky and imprisoning souls in the amusement park as shown at the end so your typical ghost tropes will probably be used here.
Obligatory Poppy's Playtime influence but nothing wrong with taking inspiration from popular IPs. It certainly didn't go to waste in this game and besides, mascot characters have been a thing for years. Maybe it's all just a coincidence but I digress, Bucky definitely has an aura of uncanniness and an appropriate scare factor to him, especially looming in the dark.
Gameplay is straightforward but executed really well. One half is engaging in item hunts as you collect chocolate scattered around the environments. The other half is survival once the lights turn off and I was quite impressed to see how it was done. Limited visibility, unnerving ambience sounds, Bucky aggro'ing you from different angles and his loud footsteps creeping up on you is a touch of dread and uncertainty I don't really feel in most horror games. I don't need obnoxious jumpscares or scripted sequences to feel frightened, a sense of uneasiness and tensity building up works wonders.
An unfortunate reality to this game is how easy it is to cheese the mechanic once you get a feel for it. I noticed Bucky spawned in certain areas more than others (to the point he can spawn right on top of you) and staying in corners gives you more leeway than being completely out in the open. Hopefully things have a more diverse approach in the Steam release so a fair challenge remains.
I have high hopes for this game once it releases on Steam because so far, I'm impressed with what has been shown. Nothing overbearing or lackluster, the darkness gimmick is well received by me and I'm curious what will be expanded upon in the future.
