[Doom 2] Coffee Break Map 4: Toxic (UV-Max 3:49 multi-segment)
Trying something new (apart from the new map set). I made a regular 4:14 run of the map. Then I decided that it would look cool to use the "recordfromto" feature of PrBoom+ for the YouTube video. Basically when you screw up, you continue recording from that point to a new demo file. You repeat until it looks nice and smooth. This is called a multi-segmented run. Technically, therefore, this is tool assisted.
However I wanted to restrict it to multi-segments since I want the run to look natural. It kind of approaches the upper limit of what a speed runner is naturally capable of. I could in theory do this in a single segment. Therefore (so far) no purposeful manipulation of the random number generator (e.g. doing segments over and over again and/or piece by piece until a very low probability event happens), no building of segments using software, no SR-50 automation. Proper TAS runs do look beautiful, but I want to do my own thing, and of course a simple multi-segment run is both much quicker to do and still looks nice.
So on to the map itself. It's a pretty decent, Episode 1 kind of map where you have access to the rocket launcher and most of the easy to medium difficulty monsters around. It's pretty linear, unless you decide to grab the green armor later. No huge surprises although there are packed rooms. The outside area with the many barrels are the most difficult, expect a bit of trouble here especially if you want to zip through and grab the key while initiating infighting. I actually missed a few shots with the RL here so the run could obviously be optimised more.
You can download the original 4:12 demo on this thread (you need a source port and a copy of Doom 2 for playback, note that it was recorded with PrBoom+ 2.5.1.3):
