[Doom 2] The Rebirth Map 32: Zoo (UV-Fast 6:46)
At 4:06, all hell breaks loose. The whole bestiary is present in a simple map where there are 16 doors, each accessible from the start, each associated with a specific monster in the game (including the snowman from map 31). You can choose to finish the map in almost any combination possible. The fact that ammo gets tight when you do it one by one, never mind the play getting boring, prompted me to open up a few doors towards the end simultaneously. For the better part of three weeks, this was a disastrous decision (bloody hard on UV-Fast). But I kept pressing onward and refining tactics and then finally, I got this sweet run on an evening where I didn't expect to actually get an exit and only played because I had nothing better to do. I guess it can help the nerves if the expectation isn't there.
Note that as far as I know, 100% kills isn't possible because two monsters are stubbornly refusing to spawn anywhere.
Here are some tactics that worked for me:
- Get the revenants to engage the barons. The barons die the hardest, so keep them occupied for as long as possible.
- Get the mancubi inside the mancubus door to engage as many monsters on the outside as possible. This is most effectively done from the snowman door, as well as the revenant door. Bonus points if you can get the slow-moving barons to get hit by those fireballs.
- Use the little gazebo structure in the middle for cover. You're gonna need it.
- Get the revenants as far away as possible from the cyberdemon's door, so that you can enter it without being harassed. This is done by running around a few times and then entering the baron's door when they have exited completely, grabbing the soulsphere. At that time, they should be far away enough, and you'd have killed two birds with one stone.
- Barons are proving hard enough to balance the infighting (they're usually stronger), so wait until the end before you release the hell knights.
- Watch out for the pinkies and specters, especially if you plan to utilize the rocket launcher. They're damn fast and it's better to run around a bit to get them to fight other monsters as well.
- Of course, I found that grabbing the backpack first (chaingunner room) avoids wasting ammo later on.
- I also found that grabbing the only armor (blue) at the spiderdemon early on is recommended.
It was actually a rather normal run - I've had quicker, and made a few stupid mistakes that aren't in other attempts of mine (two wasted SSG shots at the arachnotrons, running back in afterwards by mistake). However, I got super lucky with infighting later on, which seems to be a requirement in some of the maps I've demoed recently. The second best time is almost a minute slower, although in that one I wasted some time to search for a monster.
