It's been almost five years since I uploaded a video, for that I apologize. Sometimes, you know, life happens and priorities change. I'm also not in a position these days to spend whole weekends grinding out single segmented runs especially on -fast. Therefore, I have decided to be kind to myself and have fun while recording segmented runs, and not get stuck on the same map for months on end. Perhaps there will be single segmented runs here and there still - those I'll post for upload to the DSDA (if they are good attempts), but not these, since they will not be accepted as competitive TAS runs.

My reason for segmented runs is to show what is reasonably possible in a single segment, i.e. when there are no unfortunate deaths and the path isn't overly risky. It is segmented to help myself get a finish with a competitive time quicker than grinding out for single semented runs. It still requires the same amount of skill than in a single segment, but you don't need as much luck to survive (at least in -fast) as with single segments. I will probably not use it as much as with regular UV-Max.

I will use absolutely no other TAS features. No slowing down speed. No SR50. No RNG manipulation - segments are only re-recorded for acceptable speed and survival. This of course may lead to some unintended RNG manipulation.

But let's get on to Doom. Back then, I wasn't really happy with my 4:35, which until today, remains the only attempt at UV-Fast. I have discovered some tactics since then that improves the run. However, I kept dying or getting wandering monsters in my attempts, and life got too busy. I finally had a look again and made a few more tweaks. I think I can do it in single segment, and I want to, but I also need the time to do so. My hope is still to UV-Fast the whole mapset normally (I did the first 20, some of which I improved), but it's not a priority, and I don't want to focus just on The Rebirth - this was almost an accident by deciding on a suitable WAD for trying out UV-Fast back in the day.

In a regular run, I think I would be happy with something like 4:15. 3:58 shows what is possible if almost everything goes perfectly. I'm rusty and not moving too well, so this can certainly still be improved.

This run consists of 11 segments. I make a few different decisions now regarding the first big fight (just running through) and using my BFG shots. I also finally figured out a slightly safer approach to dropping down in the pit (after getting the blue key) that mostly doesn't lead to immediate death and almost guaranteed infighting between the arachnotron and the knights/barons. In this case, the arachnotron and knights/barons don't hit each other as the floor is in the way, it depends on where they are situated as there are stairs. Some manipulation could have made this work better.

In the final room, I see no other alternative than to wait for the pain elementals to get closer to the door before going in. They otherwise spam you with lost souls in a flash and your shots don't penetrate. So I use the time to kill the specter at the exit (in this case the two SSG shots don't make a difference) before finishing off the PEs.

This was recorded with PrBoom+ 2.6.2 with OpenGL video mode. I changed the sector light mode from GlBoom to GZDoom as it was way too dark. For some reason I can't get the gamma settings to work, but it's been a while I guess. Still, it looks OK in my view. This was also the first time I used -viddump, which is pretty cool. No need to boot up your video recording or editing software, you can post it directly to YouTube.
